Chateau Saint Martial

2016 was a fantastic year in Bordeaux and this wine is no exception.

The Chateau of Saint Martial in Bordeaux has been in the Dupeyrat family since 1782, just before the French Revolution. It is surrounded by 9 acres of vineyard that produce just the one cuvée each year. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc from vines that are 37 years old on average. The soil is sandy-gravel, typical of the Saint-Emilion appellation situated on the right bank.

After 3 weeks of maceration in concrete, a portion of the wine is aged in new oak barrels and the rest in used barrels & concrete. Less than 20.000 bottles are produced each year and sold mostly to family friends & restaurants so it is a privilege to be able to share this wine with you.

Serve room temperature - take the cork out a day before or carafe a couple hours before serving, it will smoothen tannins and add to the wine.

History

In 1792, following the Revolution, Bertrand PETIT-DUPEYRAT, descendant of a family of royal notaries, bailiff at the Tribunal de Grande Instance, bought the Saint Martial chapel, located on a mound overlooking the Dordogne.
He built a house there, on the remains of the chapel.

The chapel was founded in the 16th century on the occasion of a fountain whose water had the virtue of curing all diseases. People came from the most distant countries to get this water.

It is assumed that there existed a Neolithic stonemason's workshop near the menhir of Saint Martial (on the label). Megalith from the end of the Neolithic, this 5m high menhir has an offering hole. It would indicate the site of a prehistoric ossuary.
Classified as a historic monument, it belongs to the commune of Saint Sulpice de Faleyrens but remains a symbol of Château Saint Martial.
